Rain or Shine

Though we don’t expect any rain until late in the day on Saturday, we want to assure everyone in Acadiana that the Community Celebration in Honor of Mickey Shunick and the bike ride afterward is 100% ready to go, rain or shine. So maybe pack a umbrella or poncho just in case, but don’t let grey skies keep you away from what we know is going to be an unforgettable event. Anyway, Mickey never let the rain stop her from having a great time, and neither should we.

Details on Saturday’s Bike Ride and UL Game Seating

Sitting at the Program Table includes handing out free programs and free stickers to public and either answering questions the public may have or directing them to somebody who can help at the volunteer tent.

Work the Coca-Cola booth

(includes lifting ice)
4 volunteers
4 volunteers

Working at the Coca-Cola booth requires you be physically able to lift 20 pound bags of ice. If it is a hot day, it will be hot work. Tickets will be sold and people will redeem 20 ounce bottles of Coke or water for $1 tickets. Tips cannot be accepted for this service.

Garbage and recycling

4 volunteers
4 volunteers

Garbage and recycling requires ensuring the recycling boxes and garbage cans are relined throughout the day. It may also require sorting some recyclables out of the garbage into the recycling boxes. Nancy Shunick is very concerned recycling will not happen and so this aspect, while a little dirty, is very important to her.

Art wall

2 volunteers
2 volunteers

Shahi, a friend of Mickey’s, will be on site Saturday morning to help coordinate the art wall. She will need volunteers to help artists hang their work, ensure appropriate (ie non-violent) work is hung and is pertinent to Mickey and that the guidelines have been followed (ie sales and promotion are prohibited as is giving any art to the Shunick Family). This will require sensitivity to artists who are both children and adults. This also requires the second shift people to stay behind while the ghost bike is being installed and the UL football game starts.

General tear-down

3-6 volunteers

General tear-down is an important job. Most participants will be leaving to either go on to the ghost bike installation or the UL game (or both). We really need people to stay behind and ensure that banners are taken down, signs are taken down, chairs are stacked, the art wall is cleaned up, and that garbage is not all over the place.

Update on Community Celebration in Honor of Mickey

Community Celebration in Honor of Mickey ShunickCommunity Celebration in Honor of Mickey Shunick press release, updated on September 21:

(official event page:

The family and friends of Mickey Shunick are announcing The Community Celebration in Honor of Mickey Shunick. This is a public celebration that will take place at Parc International in Lafayette, Louisiana on September 29, 2012. Gates will open at 11:30 am, with the event beginning at noon. The Shunick family wants to emphasize that this is truly a celebration in every sense of the word, as well as a show of thanks to everyone in our community who helped to bring Mickey home. All who have been touched by Mickey’s story are invited to attend. IDI Workspace Solution will make a public art wall available for the public to share art inspired by Mickey. The Little Paint Brush Art Studio will will be providing children with an opportunity to create their own butterfly bracelets. Beer and soft drinks will be sold. Food will be available for purchase from Carpe Diem Gelato, BiBi’s Patisserie, Freetown Fries, and Zeus. T-shirts with a new, celebratory graphic will be sold by Absolutely Monogramming and Gifts for the cost of printing.

The Community Celebration in Honor of Mickey Shunick will begin with several friends sharing their memories of Mickey. The Acadiana Symphony String Quartet will join us on stage during the formal remembrance. City-Parish President Joey Durel will speak to join family and friends in recognition of law enforcement officers, volunteers, donors, university officials, the district attorney’s office, Texas Equusearch, Special K-9s and our community as a whole for this incredible effort and outpouring of love to the Shunick family. Finally, the Shunick Family will give a personal statement to the community.

The next portion of the celebration will consist of live performances from three of Mickey Shunick’s favorite local bands. Whole Damn Town will perform first at 1:15, followed by imagineIAM at 2:15, and closing with Rareluth at 3:30. The Community Celebration in Honor of Mickey Shunick will culminate at 4:15pm with a public bike ride following the route Mickey took the morning of May 19th. We are encouraging attendees to either ride or bring their bicycles to Parc International so that they may join the ride. A free “bike corral” will be managed by Bike Lafayette. The ride will conclude with the permanent placement of a “ghost bike” at the end of St. Landry Street, and ninety live Monarch butterflies will be released as a tribute to Mickey. University of Louisiana-Lafayette President Joseph Savoie will join us for the dedication of the ghost bike.

The Shunick Family requests that the public continue on to the UL football game where Mickey will be honored with her family present, and the game will be dedicated to her strength and bravery. “This day will honor Mickey’s life and her impact on this community. This brave, young woman inspired us to action and we want her legacy to be that which will continue to inspire love and kindness toward one another,” says Barbara Alexander, friend of the Shunick family. For guidelines for contributions to the public art wall, please contact Read more here on how you can volunteer on the day of the event.
